Ben Grimm was living a fairly normal life before the radiation he was exposed to transformed him into “The Thing”… an accident that granted him superhuman strength and endurance, but at the cost of ever leading a “normal life” again. The same event that changed others in ways that seemed much more “Fantastic” forged Ben into a virtually indestructible being, building him into an unbreakable wall of protection for his team as well as an unstoppable battering ram against their many adversaries. If Ben had the choice, he would’ve gladly traded his “gift” with any other member of the team… but his calling as “The Thing” required a different skill set that made him the perfect complement to the team.
The Lord doesn’t permit the adversities that we experience in life to exist because He is uncaring or insensitive to our pain… but as the omniscient God of the universe, He knows that these events are critical to building us up to be strong enough to face the unique battles that are ahead of us. Our Father uses every moment, including the ones we would’ve preferred to avoid, to generate character in our lives and produce growth that we will need in the future. Let’s be encouraged that He has a “fantastic” purpose for even the most bitter cups we are called to drink from, and hold on firmly to our hope and joy along the way.
My brethren, count it all joy when you fall into various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces patience. But let patience have its perfect work, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing. James 1:2-4
And not only that, but we also glory in tribulations, knowing that tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; and character, hope. Now hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3-5
