The Irony of “The Legend of Zelda” – Finding God in Video Games

Of all of the ironic twists that exist in the world of video games, one of the greatest is that Link, one of the most well-known characters in the entire gaming world, is the star protagonist of a franchise named after somebody else. Despite playing primarily as Link for decades, the series is called “The Legend of Zelda”… this is Princess Zelda’s story, not his. But in his quiet, humble submission to the greater narrative being told,  Link moved beyond being a mere “plot device” to taking his place in the pantheon of gaming’s most iconic heroes… in his unselfish pursuit of making sure that Princess Zelda “finished her story”, he found the meaning and purpose in his.

The narrative of this world we live in tells us to do whatever makes us happiest, but our pursuit of purely selfish endeavors will never lead us to meaningful outcomes or long-term happiness. In our decision to follow the Lord, we aren’t simply choosing to place the needs of others before our own… giving our lives to support the completion of other’s stories is now our life’s work. Christ came to be a servant of all, and He commanded all who would follow Him to do likewise. There is no “Legend of Zelda” without a Link… and it is only by committing ourselves to serving every “Zelda” around us that we will find the meaning and purpose we were designed for all along.

Let no one seek his own, but each one the other’s well-being. 1 Corinthians 10:24

Yet it shall not be so among you; but whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. Matthew 20:26-27

It is not good to eat much honey, nor is it glorious to seek one’s own glory. Proverbs 25:27
