WiBD Online Chapter Webinar – Unlock Your Potential: Goal-Setting for Success

In this insightful and practical session on July 16 2025, Dr. Jessica Brown, offered a powerful reset on how to approach goals with more clarity, intention, and follow-through.
Grounded in the OKR (Objectives and Key Results) methodology, it emphasized the shift from setting broad resolutions to creating focused, measurable, and purpose-driven outcomes.
A key insight was the importance of setting aspirational goals, those that stretch us beyond our comfort zone and inspire growth. Aspirational goals serve as a compass, helping us envision the best version of ourselves and what’s truly possible, rather than settling for incremental changes.
When goals are meaningful and ambitious, they fuel motivation and resilience, encouraging us to persist through challenges.
Yet, the session also explored why we often fall short in achieving our goals. Common pitfalls include setting too many goals at once, choosing vague or non-actionable objectives, or failing to establish clear metrics and milestones to measure progress.
Without consistent tracking systems and regular check-ins, it’s easy for goals to fade from focus. Additionally, keeping goals to ourselves rather than sharing them can limit accountability, making it harder to stay committed over time.
The session highlighted practical ways to overcome these challenges, such as identifying a manageable number of specific, observable goals, enlisting support by sharing goals with trusted others, and establishing simple systems for ongoing accountability and reflection.
Beyond just crossing tasks off a list, the OKR approach centers on aligning actions with core values and measuring progress in a meaningful way.
A thoughtful discussion on the “shiny object effect” reminded us how distractions can pull us off course and reinforced the value of returning to our core intentions.
Rather than chasing productivity for its own sake, the message was clear: growth happens when we create space to reflect, aim high, and take consistent, values-aligned action. Whether focused on personal development, leadership, or organizational objectives, this approach helps build momentum.
The session was a timely and energizing reminder that real progress begins with purpose and a plan to stay connected to it.
